Digitale Edition
Die Website „Hanslick Online“ bereitet die Schriften von Eduard Hanslick (1825–1904) auf, der im neunzehnten Jahrhundert als Musikästhetiker, Musikkritiker und erster Professor für „Geschichte und Aesthetik der Tonkunst“ im deutschen Sprachraum wirkte. Sie beinhaltet Ergebnisse mehrerer Drittmittel-Projekte, in deren Rahmen Christoph Landerer und Alexander Wilfing seit dem Jahr 2014 die historischen Kontexte Hanslicks sowie seiner Schriften ausloten.
Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf den zahlreichen Adaptionen, die diese Texte zu Hanslicks Lebzeiten erfuhren. „Hanslick Online“ stellt diese Texte (Stand 2025: 1.Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, 2. Hanslicks Schriften für die Neue Freie Presse, 3. Rezensionen der 1. Auflage von Vom Musikalisch-Schönen und 4. Dokumente zu Vom Musikalisch-Schönen im Umfeld von Hanslicks Professur) nicht nur bereit, sondern macht ebenso direkte Vergleiche zwischen den Varianten möglich. Damit füllt diese Website eine Lücke der modernen Hanslick-Forschung, die die dynamische Entwicklung von Hanslicks Denkweise immer stärker in den Blick nimmt.
Das Drop-Down-Menü „Projekt“ gibt eine kurze Skizze der historischen Bedeutung Hanslicks vom neunzehnten Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart (inklusive einer Aufstellung seiner Publikationen mit Verlinkung zu Digitalisaten, sowie Übersetzungen seiner ästhetischen Abhandlung), erläutert Intention und Zweck dieser Website und beschreibt detailliert die Abfolge jener Projekte, deren Resultate zur Schaffung von „Hanslick Online“ geführt haben. Die Ergebnisse der Teilprojekte können unter Aktivitäten (Publikationen, Einzelvorträge und Veranstaltungen) vollständig eingesehen werden.
Unter dem Drop-Down-Menü „Edition“ findet man die 10 Auflagen von Vom Musikalisch-Schönen und die Option zum Vergleich zwischen beliebig gewählten Varianten mittels automatisierter Kollationierung. Hier sind auch Hanslicks Schriften für die Neue Freie Presse (fortlaufende Publikation bis Ende 2026), die Kritiken seines Traktats und Dokumente zu Vom Musikalisch-Schönen mit TEI-Markup erscheinen. Als Schlussstein der Projektreihe wurde Ende 2024 ein Projekt bewilligt, das Vom Musikalisch-Schönen kommentiert sowie dessen inhaltliche Entwicklung visualisiert.

Digital Edition
The website “Hanslick Online” provides the writings of Eduard Hanslick (1825–1904), a central figure of nineteenth-century music, who acted as an aesthetic theorist, music critic, and the first professor for the “History and Aesthetics of Musical Art” in German-language academia. It presents findings of several third-party-funded projects, in which Christoph Landerer and Alexander Wilfing have been exploring the historical contexts of Hanslick and his works since 2014.
Particular attention is paid to the numerous adaptations these texts have gone through during Hanslick’s lifetime. Besides making these texts (as of 2025, 1. Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, 2. Hanslick’s writings for the Neue Freie Presse, 3. reviews of the initial edition of Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, and 4. documents on Vom Musikalisch-Schönen and Hanslick’s professorship) publicly available, “Hanslick Online” also facilitates automated comparisons between textual variants. The website thereby fills a gap in Hanslick scholarship, which is currently focusing more and more on the dynamic evolution and fluctuation of Hanslick’s mindset.
The “Project” drop-down menu provides a brief sketch of Hanslick’s historical relevance from the nineteenth century to the present (including a catalogue of his publication with hyperlinks to digital copies, and translations of his aesthetic treatise), explains the intention and purpose of the present website, and recounts the sequence of research projects, the results of which led to the preparation of “Hanslick Online.” The scholarly outcome of these research projects may be viewed under the “Activities” subheading (publications, presentations, and events).
Under the “Edition” drop-down menu, you will find the ten editions of Vom Musikalisch-Schönen and the option to compare variants by means of automated collation. Here, you can also find Hanslick’s writings for the Neue Freie Presse (ongoing publication finished by the end of 2026), the reviews of Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, and documents on Vom Musikalisch-Schönen, including TEI markup. As the culmination of the project series, a closing project has been granted in late 2024 that will fund both a commentary of Vom Musikalisch-Schönen and the visualization of various textual properties.
“Hanslick Online” is a work in progress, which we intend to expand in terms of content and digital functions in the not too distant future.
